Character

At Shards of Orn, you create a character, or fantasy persona, to assume while you're playing the game. You might design your character to fit a desired play style or theme, to coordinate with a group of friends, or based on similarity to characters from books, movies, or video games. The choice is entirely up to you.

Making your first character can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much work you want to put into it. Before you get started, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If at any point you need help, don't be shy about posting your questions in the forums or chat. Our existing players and staff are more than happy to assist you and offer advice.
  • You can opt to play a starting package class instead of making one yourself. Starting package classes are pre-made by the creators of the game to be generic but optimal; all you have to do is supply a name and background. If you do not RSVP with a character of your own, you will be given a starting package class when you check in.
  • Finally, you are allowed to respend your character during downtime at any point before your character reaches 60 XP (which occurs after your third event), so any choices you make at this point need not be permanent. Just choose whatever seems best to you. If you find something else more to your liking later on, you can rebuild your character without any loss of treasure or advancement.

Active vs. Inactive

In order to participate in in-play discussions, exchange treasure, or undertake projects in downtime, your character must be active. Your character becomes active after you attend an event, and remains active as long as you continue to attend at least once a year. Your character becomes inactive if you attend as a different character (making the new character active instead) or if you stop attending for more than a year.
